Playstation 3s sitting on a shelf at Wal-mart

Lately on Digg and elsewhere there has been discussion of the Playstation 3's availability, especially in comparison to the Wii. At about 6pm today on December 23rd I was at Wal-mart and overheard a man on a cellphone convincing someone it was time to give up on trying to find a Wii. Meanwhile I saw two Playstation 3s sitting on the shelf:

a couple weeks back when I was waiting outside a Target for a Wii, the manager came out and said they didn't have any Wii's in stock but they had two PS3s. the 15 or so people in line all turned them down and we had a mad rush to the Toy's R Us across the street that didn't open for another hour. They had Wii's in stock and everyone in line got one, they also had some PS3s and I saw no one purchase one.

Around 10PM EST on the 22nd at our local Best Buy there were two PS3s on the shelf, not even behind a locked cabinet, just security devices on them. A lot of PSPs as well. But not a Wii to be seen, nor DS or DS Lite.

Gaming ain't dead because I've been around since the first gaming systems. Atari, The Odyssey, Intellivision and all I can say is that we've come a long way. When are people going to get it through their thick skulls that its all about gameplay. Gaming isn't dead it's just run by companies that don't know what innovation is....it isn't graphics let me mind you. Look at the WII 2.5 million already sold....Wow! Now why is that....graphic suck yea but I've never seen people come together and play and have a really good time like I do when they play Wii Sports. The PS3 might be a power horse but $600 bucks is a lot of money for a gaming system. Okay it's got the blu-ray but it's only there because Sony is trying to push that format down your throat. Gaming isn't dead it's just going through another time of change.

Not only do I believe the picture -and- the comment about the search for a Wii, but I am a Wii seeker and I was at a Fry's electronics in northern California when I spied a large stack of PS3's. A large collection. I said to the salesman, "Dude, can I just -buy- a PS3?" And he said, "Yes. However, note that we require you buy [a bunch of stuff that he partially enumerated] totalling $1200." I turned to my brother, with whom I was shopping, and said, "Even if it weren't that expensive, I still want a Wii." So, if anybody had overheard my conversation, they would have come to exactly the same conclusion as the author of this page. So, I don't know what Wall-Mart's package looks like, but Fry's sells their PS3's encumbered.

haha sony sux, funny because of all these sonyfreaks getting so mad that their faved consoles are not as popular as nintendo's console. They have not yet accepted that no one wants to pay $600 for a console that is too powerful for most t.v.'s. Just like the xbox360, only a high-end hdtv will barely give you enough pixels to show the difference from a cheaper console such as the wii. Besides that, the ps3 has much more wasted features than the xbox360, such as the console itself, which can only support two controlers at a time, where as the wii can support up to 8 without buying any adaptors, that is with two consoles, at a total price cheaper than the ps3

I work at a Walmart in northwest Pennsylvania. We had a couple of PS3s, including a recent return, sit on the shelf for a day or two. Wiis - which I can't figure out a proper plural for - don't stay in stock at all. I've asked the associates in that department, and they say that there is easily a 5-to-1 ratio of calls for the Wii over the PS3. I don't think it's that no one is interested, but rather that the reasons to buy it right now are limited and people gave up and used the money. I think that PS3s will sit on the shelf longer than Wiis, but will still not sell as well due to limited component availability. Personally, I want a Wii, but have little desire for a PS3. It's too much and is unimpressive. The games on the demo do not interest me - I don't mind racing, but Motorstorm looks horrible, plays slow, and is buggy, at least in the demo. I'm dissappointed.

Maybe the reason the ps3's are on the shelf is because of last minute shoppers looking for a cheaper console for their 8 year old. I spent a good while in gamestop the other day (trying the new zelda of course) and all of the people coming in and talking to the clerks about wiis had no idea what they were buying they simply were looking cause their kid wanted a 'next-gen' console and that was the cheapest alternative

I have all 3 big consoles. The XBOX 360 (got it last year, love it to death), The Wii, and the PS3. I waited 29 hours in front of my Best Buy for a PS3, I was waiting with a friend, we had a blast. I thought I was going to sell my console on eBay, but nobody wanted it. Well, I am now on Christmas break from college and I took my PS3 out of the box to check it out before I return it to Best Buy before I go back to school. Well.. I hate the thing. The graphics aren't that great, load times suck, and it isn't as use friendly as the XBOX 360. It is not that impressive and it WILL still be going back to the store in a couple of days. Otherwise, I think I am going to be very happy with my Wii and my 360. Seeya PS3. -Jamie

I checked a number of stores today looking for a Wii for myself, and everystore I went into had ATLEAST 5 of each X360 and PS3 AND PSP's in stock, but NO Wii's, DS's or DS Lites. Sony seriously stumbled this time by rushing their console together at the last minute to compete with Nintendo and Microshaft. I've now seen and played a PS3 for myself, and I have to agree with half the flamers on this thread, the PS3 IS a huge piece of shit... It crashes left and right, has a horrible load time, I've seen it NOT read a number of discs... not to mention they're trying to ram Blu Ray down our collective throats to turn a higher profit. not entirely true... Sony has had teh GTA, Final Fantasy and a majority of the racing games, but recently, Racing Games popularity has seen a severe decline, as have the sales for Final Fantasy games for the Sony systems - A lot of people aren't all that impressed with how they looked, felt or played, and that the level of "anti-realism" is actually too high (Example being a 120 pound weenie lookin guy like Cloud carrying a 12 foot long, 3 foot wide meat cleaver of a sword and whipping it around like it's a fencing foil). A lot've people are ready for a change. Personaly, I'd love it if Sony stopped making consoles and started making games for Microshaft and Nintendo, then we'd have even MORE quality games. (not to say Sony COMPLETELY sucks, I'm definately no supporter of the PS Series, but I'm not going to be a Fanboi and take huge shit on it just because I like Nintendo more.) PS. MARIO IS A FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT! Nintendo needs to get rid of him. He's fucking lame.

Sony doesn't make games. They rely on third party developers. Developers have made exclusives for them in the past because of the huge market share they held, but now the tides seem to be turning, and a lot of developers are moving to make games for BOTH the PS3 and 360.

I was at an unnamed local game store with a clerk who was constantly talking about how great the PS3 was. It was so great they had two of them left. I like the Xbox 360, but I sure wish I could find a Wii. I'd trade my PSP+games for one if I could find a taker.

Sony is a good company. I have always liked there products but I think the PS3 will be there downfall. Microsoft has the 360, better graphics (even with the blu-ray they are still better), Wii is just so damned kool with the remote (and for those who don't know there is also a controller that you can get just like any other console) I love Xbox the most and Playstation's were my second favorite but having to pay AU$1000 plus AU$150 for the HDMI Cable and AU$15,000 to buy the 1080i TV you need to play it on, I think Sony just don't get it.

A win for Microsoft is much better than a win for Sony. Yes, Microsoft does dominate the PC market but who makes a better operating system or Office Suite? On the other hand, look at Sony. Sony only knows how to make over-priced crap. I think I would prefer to support a US company with a good product than a Japanese company with a crappy or even similar product any day. As for games, Sony is already losing many of their exclusives to Microsoft.

well there were ppl lining up out the door of the best buy where i work yesterday to get the last wiis before christmas and most got turned away but there were ps3s sitting on the shelf and WERE FOR SALE until the early afternoon while all wiis were spoken for late the night before

My brother works at a Future Shop in Montreal, and not a single Wii available. On the other hand, the last shipment of PS3s is still there, and not a single one has been sold since a few days O.o

Broken controllers? Now I don't own a Wii and the PS3 isn't available in Europe yet... but I'm pretty sure its the PS3 that has a wireless control that you have to physically connect with a cable on a regular basis, and the sixaxis system is a little buggy on most games...
